For example, my Westie came from a local rescue center in the UK, which has an excellent reputation for animal welfare. He has no papers to prove whether he’s a purebred or pedigree, but certainly has the characteristics and charm of a West Highland White Terrier. I paid a £125 ~ $170 adoption fee for him in 2014, which went towards covering a full health check, the necessary vaccinations, veterinary care, microchipping, and dog food. Although the adoption fee has almost tripled since then, it still seems a low amount compared to purchasing a puppy from a breeder. However, there are good reasons for that, which we’ll cover below. How Much is a Full-bred Westie? Let’s understand first what full-bred purebred means. A purebred dog is one whose parents are of the same breed and the offspring is bred true, resembling its parents. Good quality pups are bred to the official breed standard, with health and genetic tests conducted throughout the breeding process. Registrations can be done through various governing bodies, such as AKC in the US or The Kennel Club in the UK. A purebred dog that has pedigree papers can trace back to generations, and parents and ancestors are registered with the relevant governing body. The price of full-bred Westies varies a lot, depending on the breeder, the bloodline, and where you are located. This range is based on what I’ve seen online – there might be some variation between breeders. For example, in the UK you can expect to pay between £1,500 and £3,000 for a full-bred westie from a reputable breeder, and in the United States for Westies registered with the AKC, you’re looking at $1,700 and $3,800. Individual Westies can of course be more or less than this. Why Are Westies so Expensive? There are a number of factors at play that determine the price of a West Highland White Terrier or any other dog breed for that matter. When you take on a puppy from a reputable breeder, you are not just buying the puppy. You’re buying into the bloodline and you can expect some reassurance that your new pup is going to be healthy and socialized from the beginning. Luckily West Highland Terriers aren’t the type of breed that would regularly become abandoned and if they are, there are many rescues who specialize in them. You can often see them for sale on classified ads also, but always do your due diligence and thoroughly research where you’re buying from, before introducing a dog into your home. Older, adult dogs can become unwanted for many reasons; death of the owner, divorce, an unexpected illness the owner wasn’t prepared for can all be contributing factors. Regardless, by adopting an adult Westie you’ll give them a second chance in life. They are known to be protective, loyal, and affectionate towards their owners, and a Westie who sees you as their rescuer’ will be even more loving and bond with you quickly. You’ll have an advantage in that you don’t have to go through the growing pains of raising a puppy, and hopefully, they are already well socialized and house trained. O Westie, o Dandie Dinmont, o Skye, o Cairn e o Terrier Escocês, eram considerados ao mesmo tempo uma só raça com bastante diversidade. Cruzamentos seletivos baseados em qualidades como tipo de pelo ou cor, podem ter gerado linhagens fáceis de preservar em relativo isolamento nas várias ilhas do país. O Westie chamou a atenção pela primeira vez em 1907 como Poltalloch terrier, nome da terra natal do Coronel E. D. Malcom, que havia criado uma raça de terriers brancos com pernas curtas 60 anos antes. A raça trocou de nome muitas vezes, incluindo Roseneath, Poltalloch, Escocês Branco, pequeno Skye e Cairn. Indeed! Along with the Cairn Terrier "Toto" from the Wizard of Oz, the West Highland White Terrier is what many people picture when they hear "terrier." The Westie is everything a terrier was designed to be. Sturdy, spunky, and bold, he needs his daily walks and interactive play sessions. Yet he is easier to handle and friendlier than some other terriers. He can adapt to any home in which he can be a full participant and busybody. Quick to announce anything amiss, including visitors, the Westie usually proceeds to welcome them inside with a gaily wagging tail. West Highland White Terriers can be bossy with other dogs of the same sex, but otherwise coexist with other dogs and cats more readily than most terriers. Rabbits and rodents, however, are in for a stressful and probably short life, along with wild critters who venture into the Westie's yard. He will pursue with tenacity anything that moves and cannot be let off-leash except in a safe, enclosed area. Assertive but cheerful, with the typical stubbornness and cleverness of a true terrier, the Westie must be shown that you are in charge, else he may become demanding and testy when he doesn't get his own way. He does respond well to consistent discipline and to obedience training that utilizes food rewards. Keep in mind that the inheritance of temperament is less predictable than the inheritance of physical traits such as size or shedding. Temperament and behavior are also shaped by raising and training. You can avoid some negative traits by choosing an ADULT dog from an animal shelter or rescue group. With an adult dog, you can easily see what you're getting, and plenty of adult West Highland White Terriers have already proven themselves not to have negative characteristics. If you want a puppy, you can avoid some negative traits by choosing the right breeder and the right puppy. Unfortunately, you usually can't tell whether a puppy has inherited temperament or health problems until he grows up. If I was considering a West Highland White Terrier, I would be most concerned about... The dynamic terrier temperament. Most terrier breeds are remarkably similar. The same words are used over and over – quick to bark, quick to chase, lively, bossy, feisty, scrappy, clever, independent, stubborn, persistent, impulsive, intense. But some terrier breeds are more so than others. Overall, as a breed, West Highland White Terriers tend to be in the middle section of the terrier spectrum. But of course there are some individuals who will be in the higher end! Defensive reactions. I do not recommend terriers for small children. Many terriers will not tolerate any nonsense from little life forms whom they consider to be below themselves in importance. Many terriers are quick to react to teasing, and even to the normal clumsiness that comes with small children accidental squeezing of their ears or pulling of whiskers or stepping on their paw. Many terriers are possessive of their food and toys and will defend these from all comers, including children. Possible animal aggression. West Highland White Terriers are often more tolerant toward other dogs and cats than many other terriers are, especially dogs and cats who belong to their own family. But many Westies are still dominant or aggressive toward strange dogs. Westies should not be trusted off-leash. They are too likely to "take off", oblivious to your frantic shouts, after any small creature that runs. Barking. Terriers are often too quick to sound the alarm at every new sight and sound. You have to be equally quick to stop them. Grooming. Without regular brushing, combing, and trimming/clipping, West Highland White Terriers become a matted mess. On the plus side, their shedding is on the low side of average. They are NOT hypoallergenic or light-shedding, however. Health problems. West Highland White Terriers can suffer from skin problems, a serious endocrine system disease called Addison's disease, a serious liver disease copper toxicosis, cataracts, a degenerative brain disease, joint problems, and more. Though much more amenable to training than other terriers, West Highland White Terriers must still be taught at an early age that they are not the rulers of the world. The toughness that makes them suited to killing vermin can frustrate you when you try to teach them anything. Terriers are stubborn and dominant they want to be the boss and will make you prove that you can make them do things. You must show them, through absolute consistency, that you mean what you say. In other words, you must teach your Westie to respect you.
